Software Defined Radio IP

The Challenge

To develop a true Software-defined radio front-end (SDRFE) IP that can be widely programmed to operate with present and future standards covering WiMAX, WLAN, WPAN, broadcast, and positioning standards.

Result

A fully integrated transceiver with a wide frequency range and a programmable radio bandwidth. Several identical wideband LNA-Mixer input stages allow connecting different sets of specific external components for the chosen application. The baseband filter has a programmable corner frequency so that the radio-bandwidth can be programmed through the SPI interface. The zero-IF architecture minimizes the external filter components. The transmitter has a similar architecture with a wide band output pre-power amplifier which can deliver up to 0 dBm output power.

The FRAC-N synthesizer combined with smart VCO technology provides a wide frequency range up to 4 GHz and a frequency step as low as 20 Hz.

All building blocks are programmable through a standard digital interface.

In this way a flexible transceiver has been developed which can be programmed in the field towards different wireless standards.

Built in 130nm CMOS technology, it offers a small footprint, low power consumption and high reliability.
